Police getting 15 new cars
SAYREVILLE — The Borough Council recently approved an agreement to lease or purchase 15 new police vehicles for the borough’s Police Department
The agreement, with Winner Ford of Cherry Hill, Burlington County, allows for the vehicles to be funded over a two-year period. According to the resolution, funding for the 15 Crown Victorias will not exceed payments of approximately $154,068 per year. The amount is subject to an annual appropriation, the resolution states.
Tom Prusakowski, supervisor of garage services for the Department of Public Works, said the new vehicles would replace 15 older vehicles at the police department that have higher mileage. The mileage on these cars, he said, is too high for patrol vehicles. However, they will still be suitable for use by the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Prusakowski said.
Many of the vehicles the OEM uses were made in the late 1980s and have very high mileage, according to Prusakowski. Several of these vehicles may be transferred to other borough employees, such as construction officials or the tax assessor, he said.
"We use them right to the end," Prusakowski said, referring to the borough’s fleet of vehicles.
The garage services department is able to get an unusually long life out of the vehicles, he said.
The entire fleet for the patrol division of the police department will now be less than three years old, the garage services supervisor said.
