EAST WINDSOR The man accused of stabbing his estranged wife last week in East Windsor is being held on $75,000 bail at the Mercer County Correction Center until a grand jury hearing, according to the Mercer County prosecutor’s office.
Christopher Michael Lennon, 24, of Genesee Road in Hamilton was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and making terroristic threats, authorities said.
At a bail hearing on Feb. 1, state Superior Court Judge Charles A. Delehey maintained Mr. Lennon’s $75,000 bail set by a municipal judge in East Windsor.
According to information released during the initial bail hearing, East Windsor police found Mr. Lennon in the driveway of his wife’s neighbor’s home on Exeter Road Jan. 27 with his hands and shirt covered in blood.
Police said he had attacked his wife, who lives in East Windsor with their three children, with a large kitchen knife and made verbal threats. His wife, whom authorities have not identified, was able to fend him off and flee the house, as were the children.
She was treated for lacerations on her hands which were described as "deep to the bone" at the bail hearing.
Should Mr. Lennon pay his bail, Judge Delehey set several conditions on his release: Mr. Lennon is to have no contact with his wife and must submit to evaluation for alcohol abuse and follow any prescribed treatment.
Although it was initially reported that Mr. Lennon did not appear to be intoxicated at the time of his arrest, police at the bail hearing stated they smelled the strong odor of alcohol on Mr. Lennon’s breath and that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Mr. Lennon, a citizen of Northern Ireland, has no prior arrest record here. Authorities said there were some indications that he was in the process of gaining permanent residential status.
A date has not yet been set for a grand jury hearing.
