ROBERT F. FLANAGAN, 71, of the New Monmouth section of Middletown died Feb. 4 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Newark, he resided in New Monmouth for the past 40 years. He was an independent title searcher in Monmouth and Ocean counties, retiring in 1995. Prior to that, he was a title searcher for Central Jersey Title, Somerville. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Flanagan. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Lorber Flanagan of New Monmouth; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Eileen Flanagan of Howell, Brian and Ruth Flanagan of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, and John and Sharon Flanagan of Toms River; his sister, Kathleen Mathis of Brick Township; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Entombment was at Fair View Mausoleum, Middletown.
ERNEST LEO NAGEL, 95, died Feb. 5 at Bayside Manor, Keansburg. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in the Whiting section of Manchester, and Beachwood prior to moving to Keansburg. He was an entertainer, pianist and accordionist with several bands and orchestras in the New York and New Jersey area. Fluent in German, he also served as a translator for the U.S. Army in 1940s; and was a musician with the U.S. Coast Guard in the 1950s. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Matilda Charmack Nagel in 1994; and two brothers, George and Frank Nagel. He is survived by 11 cousins, Ginny, George, David and Lisa Commander of Middletown; Robert and Rob McComiskey of Hillsdale; and Laura, Ken, Victoria and Courtney Maino of South Plainfield. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown section of North Hanover.
CHASE THOMAS NELSON died Feb. 6 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, where he was born Oct. 13. He is survived by his mother, Heather Nelson of Ocean Township; his grandmother, Jeanne "Oma" Nelson of Ocean Township; his grandfather, Thomas Nelson of Middletown; his great-grandmothers, Lillian Mueller of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Jean Nelson of Red Bank; and his aunt. EMILY MORAN, 86, of Middletown died Feb. 7 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, she relocated to Middletown in 1954. She was a legal secretary for several firms in Jersey City and Red Bank for 60 years, retiring in 1970. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Peter Moran of Middletown; her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Judy Moran III of Baltimore, Md.; her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia C. and Bradley Quellet of Canton, Mass.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. FRANK M. VAN NATTEN, 75, of the Belford section of Middletown died Feb. 10 at home. Born in Orange, he lived in East Orange prior to moving to Belford in 1956. He was a retired furniture refinisher for Huffman Koos, Rahway, for 50 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, and received the Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Philippine Liberation ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Medal with two stars, and Presidential Unit Citation ribbon. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades. He was predeceased by his wife, Viola Drozdowicz Van Natten, in 1996; and two brothers, Paul Van Natten and Robert Van Natten. He is survived by two sons, James Van Natten and Kevin Van Natten, both of Belford; two daughters, Jane DeStasio of Severn, Md., and Karen Van Natten of Middletown; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be Feb. 13 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. She was a seamstress for Decorator Fabrics, Keyport, for 20 years, retiring in 1992. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. McLeod, in 1962; and a brother, Howard Frankenfield, in 1989. MARY JANE WESTERVELT, 61, of the West Keansburg section of Hazlet died Feb. 8 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Jersey City, she lived in Hazlet prior to moving to West Keansburg 25 years ago. She was a waitress at the Shamrock Diner, Middletown, for 20 years, retiring in 1994. She attended King of Kings Lutheran Church, Middletown. She was predeceased by her parents, James Westervelt and Jane Ripkey. She is survived by five sisters, Beverly Hunter of Middletown, Jacqueline Navarro Westervelt of Mead County, Darlene Lucas of Englewood, Fla., Susan Mirro of Millstone, and Laura Jean Hike of Riverview, Fla.; two brothers, William Westervelt of Palm Coast, Fla., and James Westervelt of Belleview, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. DOROTHY L. SMITH, 77, of Randolph, Vt., died Feb. 10 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Newark, she lived in the West Keansburg section of Hazlet prior to moving to Randolph 22 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Lester Leon Smith in 1995; and her son, Thomas Smith in 1964. She is survived by five sons, Harold Smith of Randolph, Vt., Richard Smith of Durham, Maine, William Smith of Gonzalez, La., Douglas Smith of Middletown, and Matthew Smith of Keyport; two daughters, Sallie Daub of Keyport, and Martha Smith of Bath, Maine; her brother, Robert Nabbe of Harriman, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
