The 70-year-old Lawrence Township resident was struck as he attempted to stop traffic.
A crossing guard was killed Thursday morning as he attempted to stop traffic on Lawrence Road in front of St. Ann’s School, police said.
Robert Gernhart, 70, was struck by a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu as he stepped into the northbound lane of the street at about 8 a.m., police said.
The car was being driven by Ruth Sweeny, 83, of Monmouth Street in Trenton, who stopped immediately following the accident, police said.
An anonymous caller summoned police to the scene, who were assisted by members of the Lawrence Road Fire Co., which is near the scene of the accident.
Mr. Gernhart, of Princeton Pike, was coherent and able to speak to first aid officials. He was transported to Capital Health Systems at Fuld Hospital in Trenton, but died while receiving treatment, police said.
A press release stated that Mr. Gernhart had worked as a crossing guard for the Police Department since 1997.
The accident is under investigation by township police and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Reconstruction Team.
Those who witnessed the accident should call Lawrence Detective Sharon Micinski at 896-7129.
