The United Way of Central Jersey Inc. applauds Gov. James McGreevey’s new Family Advocacy Project.
Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, United Ways throughout New Jersey have been helping hundreds of families whose lives were forever changed by the horrific events. While our efforts began in the immediate days following the attacks, issues such as finances, legal questions, grief counseling and emerging physical and mental health problems are ongoing. Just last week, an individual who had survived the World Trade Center attacks approached our agency and received assistance for the first time since Sept. 11. There is clearly more work to be done.
The governor’s plan to support the United Ways and other community agencies in New Jersey is aimed at helping families and survivors find their way through numerous charities, government agencies and other programs set up as part of the massive relief effort. Some 700 New Jersey families, including 70 in our service area of Middlesex County and Franklin Township in Somerset County, who lost loved ones on Sept. 11, stand to benefit from having an experienced advocate to provide family-specific objectives and assistance.
We look forward to working closely with Gov. McGreevey’s team as we continue our efforts to help people in our communities.
