The K-12 Mathematics Program Review Committee will present its interim report to the Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
.
The committee will review the issues identified at the elementary, middle and high school levels. In addition, the committee will present preliminary recommendations and discuss the next step in the review process. A final report will be presented in May. The district’s goal is to begin to implement the recommendations next school year.
The school district began the assessment of the K-12 mathematics program as part of its regularly-scheduled five-year curriculum program review. The state requires all school districts to conduct curriculum reviews on a five-year cycle. The K-12 Social Studies and 6-12 Practical Arts and Industrial Technology programs recently underwent review by the district.
The K-12 Mathematics Program Review Committee consists of parents, staff and community members. The committee formed three separate task committees for elementary, middle and high school mathematics. The school board’s Curriculum Committee and the district’s Curriculum Council, a group of staff members from different schools, is overseeing the work of the review committee.
As part of the assessment the K-12 Mathematics Program Review Committee is to:
Analyze the Mathematics Curriculum Program’s current goals, priorities, content, skills, methods, materials and assessments to determine program strengths and weaknesses.
Review current literature and research in mathematics and, if appropriate, identify and arrange visits to schools with exemplary programs.
Review the state core curriculum content standards and make sure the district’s program is aligned with them.
Ensure that the curriculum integrates workplace readiness.
Develop a program that aligns to the state standards, establishes a coherent, relevant curriculum that reduces redundancy, addresses diversity and focuses on building deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Make all recommendations as appropriate to improve and enhance the program.
Community members with questions about the review should call Assistant Superintendent Carol Roche at 737-0176.
