Work on the new elementary school in Brandon Farms continues to go well enough to allow a confident forecast that the school will be ready for students at the beginning of the 2002-03 academic year, Construction Manager David Tillou told the school board Monday night.
Mr. Tillou of the Aberdeen-based firm of Tillou and Formica said all roof work on the new Stony Brook Elementary School is done. Also complete are underground drainage and plumbing work, he said in his monthly construction report to the board.
Under way and proceeding satisfactorily are blockwork, brickwork, installation of ducts, and distribution of gas and electricity throughout the building. Concrete for the floor slab of the cafeteria was poured Monday.
"The next milestone date for this building that is critical is the HVAC (heating, ventilating, air conditioning) equipment being installed and wired," Mr. Tillou said. "This must be accomplished by March 15."
On other jobs, Mr. Tillou told the board that a permanent certificate of occupancy was obtained Dec. 3 for the renovation of halls and walkways at Central High School. The new parking lot at the school is done, he said.
The construction fence has been installed and all permits obtained for building an addition on the western end of the school. Demolition of sidewalks, curbs and exterior ramps has started.
Projects OK’d for Central High School in the October 2000 referendum (which also made money for the new Stony Brook Elementary School available) include: nine new or renovated general purpose classrooms from reconfigured existing space (project done); enlarged cafeteria at school’s western end (project started); new kitchen space at school’s western end (project started); new auditorium at school’s eastern end (project started); new full-size gym with bleachers and renovated locker rooms (started); enclosed walkways to improve hallway traffic (done).
Not yet addressed are: two art classrooms and TV production lab from old auditorium, new technology lab from existing TV lab, child study team area, office and conference space, nurse’s suite, health classroom, gym storage, athletic director’s office and sports medicine room, faculty dining and work room (western end), and expanded guidance facilities.
