The seventh- and eighth- grade boys’ basketball team from St. Bernadette’s Church in Parlin in the Sacred Heart Tournament in South Amboy Feb. 9, beat Immaculate Conception of Spotswood. On Feb. 10, the team won the Middlesex County CYO League Championship with a victory over St. John Vianney of Colonia in the league final. The players are Kurt Backlund, Joe Bartlinski, Chris Donnelly, Alex Dzioba, Eddie Gavin, Justin Gumprecht, Justin Linkletter, Joe LoBue, Justin Malone, Kevin Miller, Mike Rochford, Brian Seres, Adam Szatkowski and Tom Szatkowski. The coaches are Ted Dzioba and Terry Donnelly.

The Sayreville Rockets, a U9 boys’ tournament team, finished in first place in last week’s indoor soccer tournament held at GoodSports in Aberdeen. The Rockets won their first three games 2-1, 1-0, and 2-0 and defeated a very good team from Hazlet 3-0 in the championship game. The Rockets’ indoor record is now 5-1-1. Team members are Matthew Beckhusen, Billy Cavanaugh, Dylan Griebell, Jarred Huggins, Craig Huff, Tim Huff, Brian Link, Steven Monticello, Mike Parillo, Kyle Paustian, Nick Petruzzi, Jeremy Shedlock and Lance Weiss.

It was a successful week for the Sayreville Middle School wrestling team and the Sayreville Recreation Department wrestling program. Scott Poore finished in second place in the Middle School Tri-County Interscholastic Wrestling Championships, taking first place in Old Bridge and Wall Township, then finishing second in Brick. On Sunday, Scott Poore along with Gary Siriday from the Recreation wrestling program, finished third in Union to qualify for the state tournament, being held the weekend of March 16 and 17 in Lakewood. Five other wrestlers from Sayreville also competed in the state qualifier in Union. They were Glenn Lucas, Eric Tsang, Tom Danielsen, Mike Velardi and Shaun Redding.

The Sayreville Recreation Depart-ment Wrestling Team made an outstanding showing at Sunday’s Piscataway Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Sayreville Wrestling entered 28 wrestlers into this prestigious tournament, with 22 taking home medals. Christopher Ronan won a gold medal at 57 pounds, Daniel Bergfeldt took first place in the 67-pound division and Joshua Casiano took first at 70 pounds. Taking home silver medals were Michael Bohling (47 pounds), Joey Scott (52 pounds), D.J. Miller (54 pounds), and Daniel Brereton (91 pounds). Bringing third place bronze medals to Sayreville were Tyler Scott (40 pounds), Michael Bernstein (47 pounds), Tyler Hourahan (59 pounds), Deion Miller (60 pounds), Thomas Munier (61 pounds), Dominick Forcella (63 pounds), Andrew Viens (65 pounds), Patrick Ronan (67 pounds) and Justin Casinao (97 pounds). Also finishing in the medals round with fourth-place medals were Francis Piatkowski (48 pounds), Tony Geiger (50 pounds), Daniel Ronan (51 pounds), Taylor Coacci (56 pounds), T.J. O’Connor (60 pounds) and Billy Johnson (108 pounds). Six other Sayreville wrestlers also competed in this daylong tournament. They were Jesse Moat (63 pounds), Luke McNally (65 pounds), Matt Piskorowski (72 pounds), Rob Bermingham (76 pounds) and Mattnew Gruytch (108 pounds).
