Following an impressive victory in the opening round of the Shore Conference Tournament, the Jackson High School girls’ basketball team knew it had its work cut out for itself in order to upset top-seeded Marlboro.

For the first 16 minutes of the game, the Lady Jaguars wouldn’t go away. Jackson pestered the No. 1 seed and trailed by only 11 at halftime.

However, the top-seeded Mustangs broke the game open in the third quarter en route to a 59-34 win over the Jags in a second-round game.

Jackson had problems containing sophomore Chakhia Cole, who finished with a game-high 23 points. Cole, who also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked seven shots, scored eight points in the crucial third quarter.

Brina Pollack chipped in with 15 points for the Mustangs.

Junior forward Danielle Gressey and senior center Casey Bartolf led Jackson with eight points apiece. Jenn Murray and Aimee Rizzo each chipped in with six points for the Lady Jaguars.

In a 35-29 victory over Monmouth in the opening round, Jackson’s defense had proved the difference. The Lady Jaguars, seeded 16th, held Monmouth to single digits in three of the four quarters.

Junior lead guard Katie Batiuk paced the offense with 12 points. Gressey added six points, and Bartolf, five.
