Thomas J. Murphy, 74, died Thursday, March 14, at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills.
He was born in Monmouth Junction, and lived there until moving to Tuckerton in 1990.
He worked for Tri-Angle Cable Company in New Brunswick for 35 years as a quality control supervisor. He then worked for the South Brunswick Township Board of Education in the maintenance division, retiring in 1989 after seven years. He also served as a part-time police officer for the South Brunswick Township Police Department, having served under the late Police Chief Fred Holsten.
He was a life member of the Monmouth Junction Fire Department, and was a former member of the Monmouth Junction Fire Aid Squad. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 7046 of St. Cecilia’s R.C. Church in Monmouth Junction. He served in the Merchant Marines for two years, and later served in the Army during the Korean War period as a staff sergeant. He was a member of Lt. John J. Farnkopf American Legion Post 401 in Monmouth Junction.
He was the brother of the late Michael J. Murphy and Stasia Kirby.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian S. Murphy; two sons, John F. and Timothy M. Murphy, both of Monmouth Junction; two daughters, Mary Jane Quinn of Monroeville and Alice Murphy Tanguay of Jackson; a sister, Julia Bartlomiejczyk of North Brunswick and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral was held Monday, March 18, at M.J. Murphy Funeral Home in Monmouth Junction, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecilia’s R.C. Church in Monmouth Junction. Burial followed at St. Peter’s Cemetery in New Brunswick.
