8 FRHSD communities facing steep hike in 2002-03 taxes

Freehold Regional High School District administrators announced the tentative 2002-03 school year tax rates for the district’s eight sending communities on Monday.

The projected increases for the coming year range from 7 to 17 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

According to information provided by Dr. Joan Nesenkar Saylor, business administrator, the 2002-03 budget, totaling $127,646,170, will be paid for, in part, by a tax levy of $81,584,984 from taxpayers in the region.

The six schools in the district currently enroll about 9,700 students.

The tax levy to be paid by each town is as follows: Colts Neck, $8.12 million; Englishtown, $458,609; Farmingdale, $343,686; Freehold Borough, $2.98 million; Freehold Town-ship, $15.86 million; Howell, $16.97 million; Manalapan, $16.5 million; and Marlboro, $20.35 million.

The tax rate to support the budget will rise in all eight communities.

• In Colts Neck, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 46.4 cents to 63.6 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (an increase of 17.2 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $250,000 will pay $430 more in school taxes.

• In Englishtown, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 36.7 cents to 48 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (an increase of 11.3 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $150,000 will pay $170 more in school taxes.

• In Farmingdale, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 44.6 cents to 52 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (an increase of 7.4 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $150,000 will pay $111 more in school taxes.

• In Freehold Borough, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 52.2 cents to 61.7 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (an increase of 9.5 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $150,000 will pay $143 more in school taxes.

• In Freehold Township, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 44.3 cents to 57.4 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (an increase of 13.1 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $200,000 will pay $262 more in school taxes.

• In Howell, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 49.3 cents to 62.8 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (increase of 13.5 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $200,000 will pay $270 more in school taxes.

• In Manalapan, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 59.6 cents to 72.4 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (increase of 12.8 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $200,000 will pay $256 more in school taxes.

• In Marlboro, the FRHSD tax rate will rise from 58.3 cents to 73.6 cents per $100 of assessed valuation (increase of 15.3 cents). The owner of a home assessed at $200,000 will pay $306 more in school taxes.

There will be a public hearing on the budget at the board’s March 25 meeting at 8 p.m. at Colts Neck High School, Route 537 and Five Points Road.

Residents will vote on the budget in the April 16 school election.

FRHSD taxes are one portion of a property owner’s overall tax bill. The total bill also includes municipal taxes, local school district taxes, Monmouth County taxes, fire district taxes (in some communities) and several other special assessments (in some communities).
