GERALD LEVINE, 69, of Howell, died March 12 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in The Bronx, N.Y., he lived in Long Branch before moving to Howell 36 years ago. He owned and operated Key Systems, Howell, a fire alarm equipment manufacturing company, for 35 years, retiring in 1995. He was a Sgt. 1st Class in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a former mayor of Howell, serving from 1981-82, and served on the Township Committee in 1980. He was a member, former chief and past president of the board of fire commissioners for the Freewood Acres Fire Company, Howell. He was the former director of the Office of Emergency Management in Howell, and had been the Monmouth County representative to the Ocean County Utilities Authority. He was a member and former president of the Freehold Rotary and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was president emeritus of the New Jersey Fire Engine and Equipment Museum and a member of the British Fire Brigade Society in Great Britain. He is survived by his wife, Sally; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark Levine of Rockaway, and Barry and Darlene Levine of Lakewood; two stepsons and two stepdaughters-in-law, Gary and Anne Fox of Sanford, Fla., and Don and Stephanie Fox of Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Dale and Dan Lauricella of Ridgway, Pa., and Cynthia Ibrahim of Freehold Township; a brother, Sidney Levine of Plantation, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Toby and Seymour Friedman of Wayne; and eight step-grandchildren. Interment was at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. MATILDA T. PFEIFER, 83, of Freehold, died March 5 at home. Born in Passaic, she lived in Farmingdale before moving to Freehold in 1936. She was a sewing machine operator for Fred Polchak Atlantic Frocks, Freehold, for 25 years, retiring 43 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, and a 50-year member of Court No. 737 St. Rose of Lima Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a volunteer at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, for more than 20 years, and at the John L. Montgomery Medical Home, also in Freehold Township, for 15 years. She was predeceased by her first husband, George Pavlovic, in 1944. She is survived by her husband, Bernard H.; three daughters, Kathleen Morton of Spring Lake Heights, Barbara Mitchell of Cream Ridge and Christine Falcone of Hamilton Square; two sons, Dr. Bernard Pfeifer of Carlisle, Mass., and Andrew Pfeifer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, John Grega of Freehold Township and Steve Graga of Howell; two sisters, Anna Marazita of Freehold and Mary Vasseur of Florence, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at the parish cemetery, Freehold Township.
IRVING V. VAN DUYNE, 85, of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., formerly of Jackson, died March 7. He was a retired U.S. Navy First Class Petty Officer. A native of Jersey City, Mr. Van Duyne served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the U.S. Merchant Marines before enlisting in the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After retiring as a hull technician from the Navy, he worked at Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck, until he retired in 1977. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Plankowner of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., a 50-year member of the Fleet Reserve Association, and a member of the Florida Naval Sailors Assoc-iation. Mr. Van Duyne was predeceased by his grandson Eric Suttle and two brothers and seven sisters. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Matilda Petrone Van Duyne; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Irving V. Jr. of St. Louis, Mo. and Nicholas J. and Aimee Van Duyne of Brick; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ilene V. Van Duyne of Brick, Marty Van Duyne and her husband, Paul Philadelphia Harris of Falmouth, Va., and Rhonda M. and Arthur Vollbrecht; three granddaughters; one grandson; a sister, Edith Faltot of New Hampshire; and numerous nieces and nephews. CATHERINE P. PFLEGER, 55, of Lake-wood, died March 6 at home. Mrs. Pfleger was a counselor in the financial aid office at Georgian Court College, Lakewood, where she worked for the past year. Prior to that she worked for Pro Formance Insurance, Freehold, as an underwriter for seven years. She was born in Newark and lived in West Milford before moving to Lakewood 17 years ago. Mrs. Pfleger was predeceased by her father, Anthony DelGaldo. Surviving are her husband of 27 years, Joseph Pfleger; a son and daughter, Matthew Pfleger and Sharon Pfleger, both of Lakewood; her father-in-law, Joseph Pfleger Sr. of Forked River; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Philip Pfleger of Marlton; her mother, Louise DelGaldo of South Plainfield; and a sister, Marlene Dabrio of South Plainfield. Mrs. Pfleger was a communicant of St. Mary of the Lake Church, Lakewood, and a volunteer at Holy Family School, Lakewood. A Mass was offered at St. Mary of the Lake Church. PAUL IRVIN METZKER, 75, of Jackson, died March 17 in CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., he lived in Piscataway for 15 years and Forked River for four years before moving to Jackson 14 years ago. He was employed by the Freehold Township Water Department for many years as a meter reader before retiring. He was a World War II Army veteran. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Eleanor Drzik; a son and daughter, Paul I. Jr. and Pamela Dustin, both of Jackson; and two grandsons, Wesley and Logan Dustin, also of Jackson.
