Winifred B. ("Burtie") Pierson, 94, of Rossmoor, died Saturday, March 16, at her home.
She grew up in Bradford, Pa., graduated from Oberlin College, and came to Hopewell in 1931 to teach kindergarten at Hopewell Elementary School.
She married and stayed 36 years, raising a family and actively participating in community events. She was a member of the Women’s and Garden Clubs of Hopewell and of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church. She moved to Rossmoor in 1967, one of the first residents there, and was active for many years in the Women’s Guild and other Rossmoor groups.
Her husband, Theodore A. Pierson Jr., and daughter, Patricia Pierson, are deceased.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; M. Joyce and Donald Selbie of Littleton, Colo., and Cynthia and Rick Edel of Pennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Theodore A. III and Virginia Pierson of Pennington; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Rick and Joanna Selbie of LaGrange, Ga., Dorrie and George O’Brien of Aurora, Colo., Tom and Molly Pierson of Vancouver, Wash., Steve and Denise Pierson of New Hope, Pa., Jim and Nancy Pierson of Greenville, N.C., Joe and Suzanne Selbie of Nevada City, Calif., Jeff Pierson of Hillsboro, Skip and Jennifer Edel of Evergreen, Colo., and Patricia Edel of Pennington; 17 great-grandchildren and a dear friend, Marie Mills.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 27, at 11:30 a.m. at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 80 W. Broad St. in Hopewell.
