The Matawan Huskies, a Mid-New Jersey U14 boys’ soccer team, beat the Rahway Fire in their opening game of the season by a score of 3-1. Two goals were scored by Rob Libraty, one off a right field pass from Steve Martinez. Kenny Pesile brought home the third goal after a rush to the post by both teams. Scott Fegler, Adam Garcia, Josh Mooney, Matt Shalhoub, and Brian Worth kept the midfield active with numerous passes to the forwards, including Colin Cecere and Jon Foster. The defense, Jeff Colodin, Rob Gartner, Tom Howley and John Lane, thwarted numerous attempts by Rahway to even the score. The Huskies’ goalie, David Goodman, was in control of the net for the few times Rahway got through the defense.
The Hazlet Wave U14 boys’ premier soccer team got its first win of the spring season with a decisive 4-2 victory over the Ocean Flames. The Flames came out quickly with a score, and the Wave countered with a score in the box from Brendan Hilliard to end the first half tied. The Flames again came out and scored, but the Wave countered with a hard-booted shot from Conrad Symber from the 18-yard line. Greg Godzwon scored on a corner kick from Sean Lennon. Scott Latham got the final score on a run down the left side. The midfielders and forwards, Tommy Friscia, Jimmy Pineda, and Matt Richards did a solid job of keeping the ball in the possession of the Wave’s offense. The defensive team of Angel Martinez, Tommy Devlin, Ritchie Gautier, and Mike Sullivan showed their good defensive skills in a very physical game. There were great saves by Robby Hollywood in goal, ensuring the Wave a good win. Gene Lennon and Randy Richards coach Hazlet.
The Jersey Shore Jaguars, a 13/14 travel baseball team, is seeking five or six dedicated players. Most games are played in Lincroft Friday nights and Sundays.
