Pride in Springfield Day to be held Saturday

SPRINGFIELD Residents are being asked to show their town pride by rolling up their sleeves and tackling local litter this Saturday morning at Pride in Springfield Day.
Volunteers will gather at 8:30 a.m. at the municipal building on Jacksonville-Jobstown Road to receive their assignments to clean up local roads.
"Besides being an eyesore, illegally dumped waste poses a threat to human health and the environment," said Deputy Mayor Denis McDaniel. "It can harbor infestations, clog storm drains and pollute the land and bodies of water."
Adults should bring their own gloves and wear comfortable work clothes. Gloves will be provided for children who attend the cleanup day.
Younger boys and girls will clean up Juliustown-Jobstown Road, which will be closed for additional safety. Police, fire and emergency squads will maintain a presence throughout the day on the roads targeted for cleaning, said Mr. McDaniel.
Among the groups that will participate Saturday are St. Andrews Youth Group, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies, the Recreation Committee, Republican Club, Jacksonville Community Center, Capitol Rod and Gun Club and Wrightstown Area Rotary Club. Individuals and families are invited to join in, said Councilman Peter Sobotka.
"Pride is an important asset," said Mr. Sobotka. "Without it, things deteriorate quickly. I’m hoping for a good response on Pride in Springfield Day, which will demonstrate the interest that residents have in our community."
Lunch will be served at the Jacksonville Community Center after the cleanup ends at noon.
