Florence crushes New Egypt, 112-18

Blessed with one of its largest teams in years, the Florence township Memorial High School boys’ varsity track and field team came up with one of its most lopsided victories in years when it crushed a young New Egypt squad, 112-18, in a meet at Florence this past Tuesday.
"I thought we ran well," said Florence head coach Mike Flynn, whose team won the majority of events.
Florence’s Loron Thomas was a multiple winner with first place finishes in the 400 intermediate hurdles (66.4 seconds), the 110 high hurdles (19.1) and the high jump (5-foot-4). He also was a pivotal member of Florence’s 4×400 relay squad, which also won it race. The other members of that squad were Matt Zacharkow, Murjani Rawls and Darren Johnson.
With an outstanding throw of 44-foot-8, Florence’s Ross Ingham placed first in the shot put. He also earned a first-lace finish in the discus with a throw of 105-foot-6. Rich Bergeron picked up a victory in the javelin for the Flashes with a throw of 139-foot-1.
Florence also dominated in the distance races with Karl Sayers taking the 1600 meter race with a 5:23.7 time and Kenan Kol posting an 11:49 winning time in the 3200.
Allen Otto also had a glorious day for Florence with wins in the 100 (11.9) the 200 (24.3) and the long jump (17-foot-.25). And with a time of 60.1 seconds. Matt Zacharkow was the best runner in the 400.
As great as the win was, Coach Flynn had a tremendous amount of empathy for the New Egypt team because his team has struggled with its depth in the past too.
‘They’re (New Egypt) an up and coming team," said Coach Flynn. "They are going to be good." With athletes like Ingham, Thomas and Otto, Coach Flynn has people on his team who are already very good. He also has enough athletes to be competitive in nearly every meet. That’s a big plus.
Florence is scheduled to host a very good Maple Shade team today (Thursday). Then it is scheduled to compete in the Hall of Fame Relays at Bordentown this Saturday. And on Tuesday, Florence is scheduled at Burlington Township.
New Egypt did not have a girls’ team so Florence’s girls team could not pick up a win this past Tuesday.
