Parking in the driveways to the municipal parking lot is prohibited under a proposed Pennington Borough ordinance.
The ordinance, introduced by a unanimous vote Monday night, is scheduled for an adoption vote May 6 after a public hearing.
There are two driveways off North Main Street to the municipal parking lot. The southerly driveway is two-way. The northerly driveway is one-way, and leads to the building that houses Borough Hall, the Police Department and library at 30 N. Main.
"For some reason, the driveway has become a parking lot," Borough Administrator Karen Waldron said Monday. She said that, from her office window in Borough Hall, she has seen small children dart from between parked cars into the path of oncoming vehicles, which regularly drive too fast.
In order to give the borough the power to enforce the ordinance, signs would have to be posted on the driveway, Police Director William Meytrott said.
Mayor Jim Loper recommended that council consider revisiting the ordinance on municipal parking lot itself. The mayor said the number of all-day spots in the lot should be reduced and the number of spots with a two-hour limit should be increased.
