William A. Stout, 80, died Monday at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Born in Pennington to the late William L. and Ella Brewer Stout and a resident of Hopewell for many years, he had lived in Bernardsville before moving to Pottersville in 1959.
A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Stout attended Hopewell schools and was a graduate of Trenton State College in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. In 1953, he earned a master’s degree in education administration from Rutgers University.
He was a health and physical education teacher with Bedminster Township Elementary School for 32 years, retiring in 1980. He also served as assistant principal for two years during that time. He was a member of the National and New Jersey Education associations. A 40-year member of the Pottersville Fire Department where he was a past president, Mr. Stout was also a member of Garden State Poultry Association and Arabian Horse Association of New Jersey. He was a riding instructor at Watchung Stables and Somerset Hills Pony Club in Bernardsville. An accomplished musician, he had assisted with the Bernards High School band.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Doris Pope Stout; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard B. and Rosemary Stout of Union, Missouri and Robert W. and Cheryl Stout of West Chester, Ohio; grandchildren Alison, Amanda, Cameron, Jonathan and Caitlin Stout. Mr. Stout was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Bedminster, followed by interment at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Bernardsville.
