To the editor:
Recently I noticed an article and contest about homeless animals in The (Trenton) Times and it caused me to begin thinking about the large number of homeless animals and the number of people who purchase animals from pet stores rather than saving an animal.
First of all, many of the animals that are found in pet stores are puppy mill dogs. Customers pay a larger price to buy a puppy than it costs to adopt an animal from a shelter or answer an ad in the paper about a dog needing a good home. Additionally, many of the dogs from puppy mills have health and personality problems from the constant inbreeding and inhumane way these dogs are treated. Secondly, by adopting an animal from a shelter you are helping out the community by saving money that it costs to shelter the animal or have them put down when they are over their limit of time at the shelter. Another reason to adopt a dog or a cat is the feeling of satisfaction you get from saving a dog’s or cat’s life.
