Council approves contracts
for work at parks, rec sites
The Marlboro Township Council has awarded contracts to four companies to begin upgrading four municipal recreation facilities.
Plans call for the existing pedestrian bridge at Hawkins Park, Hawkins Road, to be replaced by a vehicular bridge. The park’s entrance will be spruced up with a new archway, fencing and landscaping im-provements. The contract for the design was awarded to Schoor DePalma for a fee not to exceed $24,755.
The news pleased neighborhood resident John Healy, who spoke at the council’s April 25 meeting. Healy said the park was in disrepair, damaged by graffiti and "really needs a face lift."
"It has been a thorn in our side for the five years we’ve lived there," Healy said.
Business Administrator Christopher Marion said the park upgrades are a priority and said the council is working on it.
Township Engineer Bill Schultz said it would likely take another three or four months before a final construction bid is accepted, but hoped the work will be done by the fall.
The council awarded a contract to the Racquet Shop, Colts Neck, to improve facilities at two locations for a sum not to exceed $16,080. At the Marlboro Swim Club, eight tennis courts will be repainted and have cracks filled. The street hockey rink at the Marlboro Recreation Center will have cracks filled and be re-striped.
Design for a sewage ejector system for the new pool area at Vanderburg Park, Vanderburg Road, will be handled by CME Associates, Howell, for a sum not to exceed $16,800. The firm will handle the preparation of applications to the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority and take bids for the unit’s construction.
Vanderburg Park will also have a new lighting system installed for its soccer field. Lucas Electric, Windsor, will set up a light contactor and control link there for a sum not to exceed $15,997.
In other business, the Office of Public Information announced that it has received a check for $75,000 from Cablevision of Monmouth. The amount satisfies the company’s obligation to Marlboro to provide equipment for the town’s planned municipal-access cable TV channel.
