Two residents of First Street in Hopewell Borough face multiple drug charges after being arrested by township Patrolman William Springer and Detective Michael Simonelli early Tuesday morning.
Elizabeth Tallman, 21, has been charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, which police suspect to be heroin, possession of hypodermic syringes, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and driving while unlicensed.
Eric Belfiore, 20, also was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance suspected to be heroin and possession of hypodermic syringes. In addition, he was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance suspected to be marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a martial arts type knife.
While on patrol on Broad Street in Hopewell Borough at 12:20 a.m., Patrolman Springer checked the license plate of Ms. Tallman’s vehicle, which was ahead of him, on his patrol car’s computer. He learned that her license had expired and he pulled her over.
While questioning Ms. Tallman during the motor vehicle stop, Patrolman Springer saw a hypodermic syringe in her vehicle, Lt. George Meyer said Tuesday. The vehicle, in which Mr. Belfiore was a passenger, was searched. "A search of the vehicle produced multiple other syringes and multiple bags containing a white powder suspected to be heroin," Lt. Meyer said.
Allegedly found in Mr. Belfiore’s possession was a pipe containing what appeared to be marijuana residue and the knife, Lt. Meyer said.
The case has been forwarded to the county prosecutor’s office. Ms. Tallman and Mr. Belfiore were released on their own recognizance after being booked at police headquarters. The substances found in the vehicle will be analyzed in a police laboratory.
