PLAINSBORO — From live music and kids’ games to historical presentations and cultural demonstrations, there will surely be something for everyone at the township’s 23rd annual Founders Day Celebration on Sunday.
The event, which commemorates the incorporation of the township on May 6, 1919, will start off with a parade at 12:30 p.m.
The parade will depart from Waters Edge Park on Pond View Drive and travel down Edgemere Avenue to Plainsboro Road, at the Dey Road intersection, then follow Plainsboro Road to the municipal center.
Featured participants include a contingent from the U.S. Marines, West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North’s marching band, Clowns with a Cause, the Central Jersey Antique Auto Club, Bloomingdale Cornet Band, Cliff Hochberg (the township’s own town crier), the MacGregor Pipe Band, Miss Plainsboro, Olympic gold medalist Lesley Bush and the WW-P Chinese Club, as well as other local community groups, cultural organizations and fire and rescue vehicles.
Children who would like to march or ride bicycles with the parade may do so by joining the Kids Kaboose, led by Kids Corner Cooperative, at the J.V.B. Wicoff School on Parkway Avenue.
Following the parade, opening ceremonies will take place at approximately 1 p.m. on the main stage at the Municipal Complex, where Mayor Peter Cantu and other municipal officials will honor a special resident for dedication to the township.
Then, from about 1:15 to 4 p.m., residents young and old will be able to take part in a wide variety of activities and also enjoy live entertainment.
Some of the performers include Mad Science, Give & Take Jugglers, the West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North Jazz Ensemble and the Society for Creative Anachronism, along with martial arts, exercise and dance performances.
The Plainsboro Historical Society is expected to open the Wicoff House with displays highlighting local history.
Games and activities for children of all ages, such as face painting, spin art, basketball toss and senior bingo, will be available, along with food concessions sponsored by local nonprofit groups.
The festivities will conclude with a family concert by the Daisy Jug Band from 4 to 5:15 p.m.
Event parking will be available at Enterprise Drive across the street from the Municipal Complex. There will be no public parking at the municipal building. Police will be directing traffic and residents are advised that road closings and detours will be in effect in the vicinity of the Municipal Complex throughout the day until 5:15 p.m.
The Founders Day Celebration will be postponed only if it is raining in the morning and is forecast to continue all day. Program changes will be announced on local radio stations as well as on the recreation information line, (609) 799-0909, ext. 2. The rain date is Saturday, May 11.
