The Hazlet Youth Athletic League will be sponsoring a three-game, round-robin summer softball tournament starting July 21 for ages 8, 10, 12 and 14. The Middletown Madness, a girls’ Premier team in the MOSA travel league, will be holding tryouts for the fall season the week of June 6 at Lincroft Acres in Middletown. To be eligible, girls must be born after Aug. 1, 1991 (they will be playing U11). The Madness is a highly competitive travel team. For the fall season, in addition to its 20-game MOSA schedule, the team will play in six tournaments, which will entail overnight travel. The St. Mary’s Athletic Association, New Monmouth, will be holding sign-ups for its summer basketball program on May 8, 15 and 22 from 7-9 p.m. at St. Mary’s School. The program will begin the week of June 23 and will run approximately seven weeks. It is open to all children entering grades 2-8 in the fall. John Snyder IV of Holmdel, a freshman at La Salle University in Philadelphia, was recently given the National Student/Athlete Award for outstanding academic achievement while participating on a varsity sport. Snyder is a member of the La Salle varsity swim team, where he competes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and the 200 IM. He is one of only three team members to receive the award.
Megan Gina Massa of Middletown has been crowned a 2001 National Champion by The American Taekwondo Foundation (ATF). Megan is the girls’ 10-and-under Black Belt Division champion. She is a second-degree black belt. She is a student at the Middletown Taekwondo Center. Megan has been studying taekwondo for the past five years, commencing her studies at the age of 5. Her principal instructors are Chris McCarthy and Robert Meyer. In her pursuit of the National Championship, Megan attended five tournaments throughout the United States. In 10 competitions (forms and sparring), she took home eight first-place trophies, three for forms and five in sparring. Megan attends Harmony Elementary School in Middletown, and is the first N.J. student to be crowned National Champion by the ATF.

Lauren Coleman, of Middletown, has advanced to the 2002 Junior Olympics for rhythmic gymnastics. The competition will be held May 24-26 in Charleston, S.C. To qualify for the Junior Olympics, Lauren competed in the New Jersey State Competition on March 16 at The College of New Jersey, Ewing, and took first place.
That enabled her to advance to the regional competition, held in Kennett Square, Pa., on April 5, where she also took first place in the all-around competition for Level 6 gymnasts.
Lauren has been a member of Head Over Heels Gymnastics in Middletown for four years. Her coaches are Michela Greco and Jeanne Grundman.
The Jersey Shore Jaguars 13/14 travel baseball team is seeking two to three dedicated players. Most games will be played in Lincroft. The season starts in May and runs through July. The Hazlet Wave U14 Premier soccer team defeated the Manalapan Raptors 4-0 to continue their winning streak. The game started fast with the Wave striking quickly on a pass from Jimmy Peneda across the goal to Scott Latham. Pineda had his second assist on a pass from Sean Lennon that he shot down the right side to Conrad Symber to score. Scott Latham scored his second goal on a pass from Matt Richards to end the scoring in the first half. After assisting on two of the Wave’s goals, Jimmy Pineda scored in the second half on a pass from Scott Latham.
The River Plaza-Lincroft Chargers Pop Warner football and cheerleading teams will hold an open registration May 10 from 7-9 p.m. and May 11 from 10:30 a.m.-noon, at the Charger Field Clubhouse on Nutswamp Road. Football registration is open to children ages 5-14 as of Aug. 1. Cheerleading registration is open to children ages 5-10 as of Aug. 1.
