A total of 36 students form East Brunswick Taekwondo Center traveled to the 2002 AAU N.J. State Taekwondo Championship in Rockaway. The tournament served as a qualifier for the AAU Taekwondo National Championships to be held in July in Greensboro, N.C. Students from East Brunswick came home with a number of medals from the event. Winning gold medals were John Arnone, Thomas Asciolla, Muralee Balaguru, Phillip Barnes, Carolyn Chu, Charles Ferrone (2), Stephen Gendlek, Florence Kwok, Eric Makarevich, Michael Senft and Nicole Willis (2).

Winning silver medals were Michael Arnone, Thomas Asciolla, Natasha Bhuta, Carolyn Chu, Kenneth Chu, Shawn Shivalkar (2), Stephen Gendlek (2), Deborah Goodwin, Thomas Kelly, Florence Kwok, Kristen Oliva, Stephanie Olson, Aaron Owens, Allan Owens, Shalen Shivalkar, Sherman Szeto, Brittany Walker and Nicole Willis.

Winning bronze medals were Michael Arnone, Thomas Asciolla, Natasha Bhuta, Carolyn Chu, Kenneth Chu, Shawn Shivalker (2) Stephen Gendlek (2), Deborah Goodwin, Scott Helwig (2), Bradley Herman, Thomas Kelly, Edmund Law (2), Ryan Lizotte (2), Eric Makarevich, Michale Malatesta, Aaron Owens, Allan Owens and Michael Senft.

Earning honorable mention were Jake Olson, Ethan Rosenberg, John Sabin and Brent Walker.

The students are under the instruction of Kevin Balon, a Fifth Degree National Black Belt, and chief instructor of the East Brunswick Taekwondo Center for the past 12 years. He also acts as the state chairman for the N.J. AAU Taekwondo program.

The Kevin Boyle Basketball Camp, headed by Kevin Boyle the head coach of St. Patrick’s High School in Elizabeth, will again be holding four sessions of camp this summer. The camp is for boys and girls ages 7-16, beginner to advanced. The first session will be held June 24-28; the second, July 15-19; the third, Aug. 5-9; and the fourth, Aug. 12-16. The centrally located site will be A.L. Johnson High School in Clark, which is easily accessible off exit 135 of the Garden State Parkway (about 20 minutes from the Brunswick area). The Clearbrook Golf Club has given the Monroe Golf League an extra day. The course will be available Tuesday afternoons as well as Wednesdays. Same rules apply to both days. For information, call the Monroe Recreation Department at (732) 723-5000.

The Fast Break Basketball Association, a not-for-profit youth basketball program in East Brunswick, is holding registration June 1. Registration is in person only. Mail-in registrations will be accepted after June 1. The in-person registration will be held from 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the Hammarskjold Middle School cafeteria, 200 Rues Lane. The Greater Middlesex Conference Football Coaches Association will hold its 12th Annual Spring Football Demonstration Clinic May 9 from 4-10 p.m. at East Brunswick High School.
