Negotiations werehandled responsibly

To the editor

In response to the letter from Annette Sammer that appeared in the June
27 Hillsborough Beacon, I must disagree with her accusation that our
elected Township Committee members have broken their campaign
promises.
From my perspective, they have acted (in regard to
the PEC/SKP housing project, which was the subject of Ms. Sammer’s
concern) responsibly, thoughtfully, and with integrity. Their approval
of the development project will protect Hillsborough from still more
expensive litigation and from a potential judgement that could be
extremely detrimental to our community.
Certainly one wishes that Hillsborough had never been
placed in this difficult situation, but the Greenbriar project
advocates truly made it inevitable. The settlement that has now
resulted is not perfect. However, it does enable the township to move
forward in its planning efforts with its attention on the future, not
on the errors of the past.
I believe that the Planning Board and the Township
Committee members who supported the settlement should be commended,
certainly not vilified.
