The "hoopsters" participated in the sixth annual American Heart Association (AHA) "Hoops for Heart" program and their efforts led Linwood to be named Middlesex County’s top AHA Hoops for Heart school by raising $5,959.

Hoops is an educational and fund-raising event geared for middle and high school students, and is cosponsored by the AHA and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. More than 40,000 students in the tristate area took part, including students from more than 140 New Jersey schools.

Other schools and totals were Herbert Hoover Middle School, Edison, $5,419; Quibbletown Middle School, Piscataway, $3,039; Upper Elementary School, Plainsboro, $2,651; and South Amboy Middle-High School, $1981.

The students also learned about the value of a healthy lifestyle and the benefits of regular physical activity, proper nutrition and living tobacco-free, while raising money to support AHA’s mission to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Funds will help support the association’s community programs, education and research.
