Registration is now going on for fall courses and lectures offered by the Rutgers University Academy for Lifelong Learning (RU-ALL), a program open to New Jersey residents over age 50. Classes for the 10-week semester will begin on Sept. 9 at the Reformed Church, 23 S. Second Ave., Highland Park.
RU-ALL will offer 32 noncredit courses and seminars this term, with topics ranging from famous courtroom trials to writing an autobiography to African studies. Courses on French romantic writers, genealogy research and Shakespeare’s views on love, passion and betrayal also are available.
RU-ALL’s weekly roundtable, Rational Controversy, will return for another semester of discussion on controversial issues.
The Scholars/Biography lectures will provide a series of thought-provoking presentations, while Great Decisions 2002 will cover eight U.S. foreign policy topics.
In addition, many arts and cultural programs will be available. RU-ALL students may explore collage-making or haiku writing.
Several courses on playwrights are offered, as are classes on film, Romantic-era music and the collections at the Zimmerli Art Museum, New Brunswick. Courses featuring performances at the George Street Playhouse and the State Theatre, both New Brunswick, also are available.
All courses are led by instructors from area colleges, universities and high schools. Some instructors are retired Rutgers professors.
There are no grades or exams, and RU-ALL is open to individuals with or without a college degree. Participants may choose up to two courses for a $100 fee, $50 for first-time registrants.
Classes are held during the day on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Reformed Church. The church is accessible to the handicapped, and on-site parking is available.
Advance registration by Sept. 6 is required for all courses.
