The Lakewood Recreation Annual Home Run Derby was recently held at all township playgrounds, with the winner of the individual playgrounds competing for the championship held at FirstEnergy Park, home of the Lakewood BlueClaws. Eleven-year-old slugger Jamir Poston took the 9-11-year-old division and Reverend Clayton’s representative Michael Asare, 13, won the senior division. Jamell Wyatt of School No. 5 took second place honors, slightly edging out D’Zio Park’s Nathanael Paone. Reverend Clayton’s Marvin Brodie downed Ron Carr of Clifton Avenue, for second place honors in the 12-15 division. The following were the quarterfinal playground winners: 12-15 year-olds, Ashley Antuna (Oak Street), Kevin McCutcheon (School No. 5), Ismale Davila (Hearthstone), Ron Carr (Clifton Avenue), Matt Gilbert (D’Zio Park), David Jackson (D’Zio Park), Naomi Cusiano (D’Zio Park), Kevin Bishop (Pine Park), Ryan McDonald (Pine Park), Marvin Brodie (Reverend Clayton), Mike Asare (Reverend Clayton), and Kyle Wallace (Sunset Park). The 9-11-year-old quarterfinal winners were: Jarrod Crudup (Oak Street), Jamell Wyatt (School No. 5), Jamir Poston (Hearthstone), Corey Hudak (Clifton Avenue), Nathanael Paone (D’Zio Park), Alex Lopez (D’Zio Park), Brian Gilbert (D’Zio Park), Jesse Hammerstone (Pine Park), Will Copeland (Pine Park), Aaron Johnson (Reverend Clayton) and Terrell Jones (Sunset Park).
Lakewood Mayor Raymond Coles recently presented awards to individual playground winners of the 20th annual Hot Shot Basketball Contest, held on all playgrounds under the direction of Lakewood High School varsity basketball coach John Richardson and his staff.
The local winners were Lascell Campbell, Karen Gadson and Raymond Donaldson (Clifton Avenue School; Kalle Wallace, Edgar Riveria and Allan Wallace (Sunset Road); Travis Poston, Luis Galarza and Kareen Reeves (Hearthstone); Jordan Spruill, Jerry Copeland, Will Copeland, Kyle Sleckman, Kevin Bishop and Brian Reed (Pine Park); Kamaria Vaughn, Margie Perez and Maria Giacini (Oak Street School); Darius Hill, Michael Asare and Jamar Montgomery (Rev. Clayton Park); Dante DeCapua, Robert Viviano and David Jackson (Larry D’Zio Park); and Javon Brown, Jamell Wyatt and Sherron Williams (No. 5 School).
The overall champions were 6-8-year-olds Jordan Spruill (Pine Park), followed by Dontay Decapua (Larry D’Zio Park), and Lascell Campbell (Clifton Avenue School); 9-11-year-olds, Will Copeland (Pine Park), followed by Kyle Wallace (Sunset Road), and Robert Viviano (Larry D’Zio Park); 12-15-year-olds, Ismael Davilla (Hearthstone), followed by Kevin Bishop (Pine Park), and Michael Asare (Rev. Clayton Park).
