PLAINSBORO The Township Committee on Wednesday unanimously selected L.J. Makrancy & Son Inc., a Trenton-based nursery and landscaping contractor, to build a new veterans memorial at the municipal complex.
L.J. Makrancy & Son Inc., the lone bidder for the project, bid $219,997 to construct the memorial, which is expected to be completed by Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
The memorial is expected to consist of a grid of trees, with one missing to symbolize the void left by the residents of Plainsboro who have died or served in military conflicts throughout the 20th century.
The grid of trees will be adjacent to the south side of the Municipal Building, in front of its balcony near the loading area. The memorial also will feature a sculpture, created by Tim Johnston of Manassas Granite and Marble Inc. of Virginia.
In other business Wednesday, the committee authorized a takeover agreement for work on the Nature and Environmental Education Center at the Plainsboro Preserve on Scotts Corner Road.
The agreement allows general contractor DKD Construction Enterprises Inc. to abandon its $1.185 million contract and authorizes new general contractor Consolidated Building Corp. of Roselle Park, hired by DKD’s bonding company, St. Paul Surety, to assume responsibility for the project.
According to Patrick Guilfoyle, township administrator, the new general contractor is expected to begin working on the center Saturday.
The committee also authorized the purchase of a 65-acre parcel owned by Edith Perrine on the northern border of the township for $1.951 million.
The property is located off Perrine Road east of Schalks Crossing Road and is expected to be added to the Plainsboro Preserve.
