DOROTHY BECKER ERTLEY, 76, of Lakewood, died Aug. 12. She was born in Newark and resided there and in Freehold before moving to Lakewood in 1976. She was employed for 31 years as an account manager at Post-Exchange, Fort Monmouth, retiring in 1973. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl W. Ertley. Surviving are four stepsons, Ernest Ertley of Saugus, Calif., Eric Ertley of Hartville, Ohio, Dale Ertley of Brimfield, Ohio, and Donald Ertley of Nairobi, Kenya, West Africa; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Audrey Becker of Pine Beach; one nephew and two nieces. Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
JONATHON DAVID HARRIS, 71, of Lake-wood, died Aug. 16 in Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He was born in Freehold, and lived in Howell and Toms River before settling in Lakewood eight years ago. He was the owner and operator of John Harris Landscaping for the past 35 years. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Freehold, and the Calvary Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, Lakewood. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Cynthia Rosin. Surviving are his wife, Janice Harris of Lakewood; two sons, Donald Harris of Texas, and Jonathan Harris of Georgia; four daughters, Louise Rosin of Manchester, Deborah Hamilton of Medford Lakes, Joanna and Alicia Harris, both of Lakewood; two step-sons, Jay and James Crick, both of Bayville; two step-daughters, Janeice Goude of North Carolina, and Jennifer Romans of Whiting; three sisters, Elizabeth Applegate of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lillian Layton of Howell, and Iris Smith of Pinellis Park, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Interment was in Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia section of Howell.
PEGGY VanSCHOICK MACKEY, 69, of Berkeley Township, died Aug. 18 at home. Born in Freehold, she lived in Lakewood for three years and South Carolina for three years before moving to Berkeley Township six years ago. She was a clerk for AT&T, Woodbridge, for 35 years, retiring in 1988. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Hayden S. "Mack" Mackey; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and David D’Amore of Beaufort, S.C., and Gail and Ken Szeliga of Brick; a brother, William VanSchoick of Point Pleasant; a sister, Catherine Van Sant of Lakewood; three grandsons; and two granddaughters. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Chapel, Freehold, followed by interment in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. ARTHUR SODEN, 78, of Jackson, died Aug. 22 at home. He was born in Freehold and had lived there most of his life. He had lived in Florida for three years before moving to Jackson Township. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a road foreman for the Monmouth County Road Department, District 9, for 29 years before retiring 16 years ago. He was a life member of American Legion Post No. 54 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4374, a 25-year member of B. P. O. E. Lodge No. 1454, all of Freehold, and a former member of the Reformed Church of Freehold. His wife, Dorothy Soden, died in 1996 and a daughter, Gail Soden died in 1961. Surviving are three sons, Gary Soden of Florida, Guy Soden of Jackson, and Arthur Soden Jr. of Belmar; two daughters, Grace and Rose A. Soden, both of Freehold; and one granddaughter. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
EDWARD DWYER, 80, of the Brick Town section of Brick, formerly of Old Bridge, died Aug. 20 in Brick Hospital. His wife, Agnes Thornton Dwyer, died in 1994. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Cullinan of Fort Myers, Fla.; five sons, Edward Dwyer of Brick Town, Richard Dwyer of DeBary, Fla., Michael Dwyer of the Mays Landing section of Hamilton, Robert Dwyer of Freehold and Matthew Dwyer of Jackson; a brother, Walter Dwyer of Monroe, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A Mass was offered at St. Ambrose Church, Old Bridge. Interment was in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown section of North Hanover.
WILLIAM J. MOSHER SR., 80, of Tinton Falls, died Aug. 26 at home. Born in Hudson Falls, N.Y., he had lived in Lincroft and Shrewsbury before moving to Tinton Falls in 1965. Mr. Mosher was co-owner and founder of Red Bank Drapery Shop, Red Bank. He previously was a drapery buyer for various department stores, including Montgomery Ward in Maryland, Scranton Dry Goods in Scranton, Pa., and Stanfords in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois, where he received a bachelor’s degree and was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Mr. Mosher was predeceased by two sisters, Marjorie and Lucille Mosher. He is survived by his wife, Mary C. (née Mullen); three sons, William J. Jr. and Robert, both of Tinton Falls, and James of Magnolia, Del.; three daughters, Carolyn Burns of Jackson, Elaine Mutz of Brick and Nancy Mosher of Woodbridge; and six grandchildren.
FOSTER ELMORE "SAM" SLADE, 63, of the Perrineville section of Millstone, died Sept. 1 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Freehold before moving to Millstone. He was a traffic analyst for the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, Md. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a graduate of Freehold High School and the University of Maryland. He is survived by five brothers, Richard, Howard and Kevin, all of Freehold, Al of Missouri, and Desmond of Jackson; a sister, Alyce Dziedziech of Smithtown, N.Y.; and two aunts and an uncle, Mary Ryan of Limerick, Ireland, and Rodger and Therese Ryan of San Jose, Calif.
