In recognition of October as Discover Jersey Arts Month, the Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission will sponsor a variety of upcoming events.
Three visual essays are on the schedule for the Tuesday night adult education classes at Monroe Township High School, Perrineville Road:
• Oct. 1 — a video study of writer Mark Twain starring actor Hal Holbrook;
• Oct 8 — Beethoven’s fifth and final piano concerto, subtitled "The Emperor," will be presented in a video study featuring Glenn Gould;
• Oct. 15 — the subject will be Rembrandt, the master painter of his age.
All lectures will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the high school auditorium. There is a $3 registration fee for each event.
A mixed-media watercolor and gauze hands-on workshop is planned from 6:30-10 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the high school. Jean Morgan Gross will lead the workshop.
"A Celebration of the Visual Arts," the township’s third annual community-wide arts show, will take place from Oct. 15-21 during regular hours at the Monroe Township Public Library, 4 Municipal Plaza.
Jean Morgan Gross will lead a mixed-media, hands-on watercolor workshop incorporating inks, wax paper and plastic wrap, from 6:30-10 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the high school.
The Nassau Brass will appear at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the library. The quintet’s concert repertoire will include a wide range of Dixieland, ragtime and Broadway show tunes.
The performance is free of charge, but reservations are required due to limited space. To reserve, call (732) 521-4400, ext. 134, and leave name, telephone number and number of individuals attending.
The Mighty Oak Players, Monroe Township’s community theater group, will present Beau Jest, a comedy about interfaith romance, at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and 2, and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the Richard P. Marasco Center for the Performing Arts at the high school. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Advance tickets will be available at the Senior Center transportation window in the municipal building.

‘Newsies in Revue’
coming to S.R. Library
The Theatre Company of the East Brunswick Academy of Music will perform Disney’s Newsies in Revue at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the South River Public Library, 55 Appleby Ave. Area teens will perform in the production.
The musical, designed for individuals ages 5-15 and their families, tells the story of newspaper peddlers and delivery boys during the early 1900s in New York City.
Admission is free of charge.
