Women’s club to hold membership luncheon

The Westlake Women’s Club of Jack-son will be holding its annual membership luncheon on Sept. 30 at noon at The View at Eagle Ridge Golf Club, 2 Augusta Blvd., Lakewood.

Guest speaker will be author Mary Maynard, who will speak on her book My Far Away Home, a story about a young girl growing up during the Depression as seen through the pages of her mother’s diary.

The Westlake Women’s Club currently has a membership of more than 200 and will supply volunteers for a variety of community needs. Past fund-raisers have supplied 10 regulators for the Jackson First Aid Squad and made donations to the Harbor House. Donations are currently being accepted for the Children’s Special-ized Hospital in Toms River. This week, members will be Grandparents-For-A-Day at Holman Elementary School in Jackson.

Jackson VFW’s fall turkey shoot under way

Jackson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4703 began its annual Fall Turkey Shoot on Sept. 22. It will continue every Sunday through Nov. 24. The shoots take place at the post home on Magnolia Drive, Jackson. The festivities begin at 1 p.m. and everyone is invited to participate. Shotguns (12-gauge only) are used for the individual rounds. Participants are asked to bring their own guns — shells will be provided. Guns must be standard factory manufactured without special modifications. Shooting will be at targets not real turkeys. Turkeys, whole smoked hams, steaks and shrimp packages will be awarded as prizes. The Ladies Auxiliary will operate a concessions stand providing hot food and beverages. Self-defense classes

offered for seniors

Kimball Medical Center’s Senior Health Network, 198 Prospect St., Lake-wood, is offering self-defense exercise classes for older adults every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The one-hour classes are $3 each and preregistration is required. The classes are taught by a black belt instructor and are designed to meet the needs of both men and women of all ages. Instruction will include joint and balance exercises, and escape methods from counterattacks to wrist grabs to muggings and/or knife attacks. Attendees will be taught to focus on balance and leverage over strength. Class size is limited. To register, call (732) 730-1236.

OCC concert band

seeks new members

The Ocean County College Concert Band is seeking new members for its upcoming season. Membership is open to anyone in the community 18 years of age or older who plays an instrument. Members do not have to be OCC students.
