History of blacks in N.J.

to be topic of program

On Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. the Lakewood library will host a presentation by Giles R. Wright of the New Jersey Historical Commission. Wright’s seminar, "The Black Historical Presence in New Jersey," is a discussion of the three factors that have made the black historical experience in New Jersey unique: the state’s geographical location, the patterns of black migration within the state, and the small-to-medium size of New Jersey’s communities. Call (732) 363-1435, ext. 13, to register for this free program.

Wright is the state’s official black historian and heads the Afro-American History Program for the New Jersey Historical Commission. He is an expert on the Underground Railroad and has researched its operations in New Jersey. This presentation is co-sponsored by the library’s Diversity Committee and the Horizons Speakers Bureau, which is funded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
