KEYPORT— For the past nine months, Sidney Becnel has been working on his collections "Les Femmes of Duke Gardens" and "Louisiana, Americana."
The 25 oil paintings in these two collections will be on display for the entire month of October on the left wall of McEwan’s restaurant, 27 W. Front Street.
The 16 paintings in the "Les Femmes of Duke Gardens" series are his "interpretation of the seven or eight statues in the Duke Gardens in Sommerville," Becnel said.
He said the paintings explore "who might the women have been before they were models for the statues."
The remaining 19 paintings are part of his "Louisiana, Americana" series.
These paintings explore Louisiana’s past, including "what were once grand plantations that are now extinct," said Becnel.
Becnel was born in Louisiana and moved to Keyport in 1976.
He has been painting for 42 years.
A booklet of 83 original Becnel paintings is available for free at McEwan’s.
McEwan’s is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.
