Applications ready for
arts high/middle schools
Audition applications are available for students in grades 7-12 for the nonprofit Middlesex County Arts High School and Arts Middle School programs, sponsored by the Arts Education Center of Greater Middlesex County. Accelerated courses in the literary, performing and visual arts, taught by professionally qualified artists who are also experienced teachers, are free to enrolled students.
Each year, approximately 800 students audition for 200 places in the high school program and 150 places in the middle school program.
Choices include creative writing (multigenre, fiction, poetry or playwriting); modern dance; instrumental music ensembles (brass, clarinet, flute or improvisational jazz); vocal music (Broadway, classical or musical theater); music composition; theater arts; visual arts; and arts photography. Although students may audition for two art forms, they may only attend one class each spring semester.
The arts schools collaborate with 54 Middlesex County schools. Enrolled students are released from their home school for one afternoon a week. Transportation is provided to the program locations in Edison; the sites are provided free of charge by Middlesex County College, the Edison Recreation Department and the Stelton Baptist Church.
Registration deadline for Arts High School is Nov. 1, with a Nov. 24 audition date. The Middle School of the Arts registration deadline is Nov. 15, with auditions set for Dec. 7.
Most school districts in the county pay the prescribed tuition fee. The program has been made possible in part by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission; the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts; the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York; St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick; and community donors.
