ethnic survival lecture
The Middlesex County Chapter of the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee will offer a lecture titled "Strategies for Ethnic Survival" at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.
Guest speaker will be Professor Michael Aaron Rockland, chairman of the American Studies Department at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, and a contributing editor with New Jersey Monthly magazine. Rockland will offer a slide presentation and discussion on his new book The Jews of New Jersey: A Pictorial History."
Admission is free. Members and nonmembers are welcome.
The Brandeis University National Women’s Committee raises funds for the libraries at Brandeis University, Waltham, Mass. Individuals need not be Brandeis graduates to join the panel.

Monroe community tree
lighting slated for Dec. 7
The Monroe Township Mothers Club will hold its annual Monroe Community Tree Lighting Celebration beginning at 6 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Garvey’s Family Restaurant, Spotswood-Gravel Hill Road. In case of blizzard or downpour, the event will take place on Dec. 8.
The celebration will feature caroling, refreshments, entertainment and the arrival of Santa on a fire truck.
Participants are asked to bring an ornament or decoration that represents the unique style or ethnic background of their family or community group. Stickers with the family name will be placed on the back of each decoration.
Gloves, mitten and/or socks are requested for donation to Monroe families in need.
O.B. hospital auxiliary
plans Nov. 18 meeting
The Old Bridge Auxiliary of Raritan Bay Medical Center will host an open meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 in Auxiliary Hall B and C, lower level of the hospital’s Old Bridge division, off Ferry Road, between routes 9 and 18.
Officers for 2003 will be elected. New members are welcome.

Methodist church plans
candle party for Nov. 21
Conklin United Methodist Church, South River, will sponsor a candle party at 6 p.m. on Nov. 21 at Cambridge Candle Shop, 42 Main St., South River.
All proceeds will support United Methodist Women’s mission work. Refreshments will be served.
