A 74-year-old Jamesburg man was accidentally shot by a South River resident when the two were part of a hunting trip in New York Nov. 20, according to police.
Santo J. Intravartolo, of Church Street, was shot in the left hip by a bullet from a 12-gauge shotgun at approximately 9 a.m., New York state police Lt. Philip Pettine said.
Intravartolo was hunting with a group of 10 people near Howard, Steuben County, N.Y., when a bullet that had been directed at a deer passed through a 4-inch-wide pine tree and struck him in the left hip.
The bullet exited through his right buttock, Pettine said.
Intravartolo was still in serious condition on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson from Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
After an investigation, police determined that the shot was fired by Christopher R. Cook, 24, of Mako Court in South River, who was about 70 yards away from Intravartolo at the time, Pettine said.
The lieutenant said he had no record of any charges being filed against Cook as of Tuesday.
The New York State District Attorney’s Office did not return phone calls on the matter.
Just prior to the accidental shooting, Cook was among six members of the group who were herding deer toward the other hunters.
Intravartolo was one of the four hunters who were watching for the deer to come closer, Pettine said.
Intravartolo was transported to St. James Hospital in nearby Hornell, N.Y., and then brought to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he remained on Tuesday.
Cook, who was reached at his home Monday, said he did not want to comment on the incident.
