LITTLE SILVER — Mayor Suzanne S. Castleman and members of the Borough Council are now salaried.
The Borough Council on Monday night unanimously approved an ordinance establishing salaries for the first time for those public officials. They previously served without pay.
The ordinance sets a salary of $3,000 a year for the mayor and $2,500 a year for each council member.
The ordinance was adopted after a public hearing which drew one questioner wanting to know why salaries were being established.
Besides compensating the mayor and council members for their time, having salaries will make them eligible for the state pension plan.
By comparison, Oceanport pays the mayor and council members $1,500 each while Eatontown pays the mayor and each council member $6,296. In Tinton Falls, the mayor is paid $5,000, the council president is paid $4,000 and each of the other council members is paid $3,500.
In Red Bank, the mayor is paid $6,750 a year and each of the council members is paid $3,375.
Shrewsbury, Fair Haven and Rumson still don’t pay the mayor and council members.
