Jackson student named among top 5 percent

Dr. Edward Gere, principal of Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River, has announced that Keith Cialino and Alexis Faulkner of Toms River, Camille D’Andrea of Normandy Beach, and Kieran Flemming of Jackson have been named Commended Students in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Commended students place among the top 5 percent of more than one million students who entered the 2003 competition by taking the 2001 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Quali-fying Test.

Gere also announced that Candace Mosely of Lakewood scored in the top 5 percent of more than 111,000 black Americans who requested consideration in the 2003 Achievement Program when they took the 2001 PSAT/NMSQT. Mosely’s name will be included in a roster of more than 3,000 outstanding Achievement Program participants being referred to about 1500 U.S. colleges and universities.

lacrosse in Howell

Howell Recreation is currently forming a youth lacrosse program for children in grades three through eight to run from mid- to late-February through the third week in May. No experience is necessary. Registration will take place Jan. 6-17 at the Howell Recreation Building, 251 Preventorium Road. Registration hours will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also Monday through Thursday from 6-9 p.m. Registration for Howell residents will be $65 and nonresidents will be $80 plus cost of equipment. Freehold Art Society

names exhibit winners

The Freehold Art Society has announced the winners of awards in an exhibit that is on display at the Manalapan Senior Center.

The winners of the Judge’s awards are: Carolyn Tischer Bartlett of Howell, for the pastel painting "Debbie’s Hat," Vicky Culver of Howell for the photo collage "Stargazer II," and Sue Folinus of Millstone Township for the pastel painting "My Girl Candy."

Honorable mentions were awarded to Carolyn O’Shaughnessy of Freehold Township for the watercolor "Roses," Denise Perks Novicky of Lakewood for the sculpture "Birdie?," Charlyn Mair of Manalapan for the Prismacolor drawing "Morning Glories," and Dian Sirkin of Howell for the photograph "Bottles."

The exhibit will run until March.

Parks’ activity directory will be available Jan. 6

The next issue of the Monmouth County Park System’s Activity Directory will be released Jan. 6. The directory will feature details about the park system’s winter schedule of special events and nature, recreation and sports programs, as well as summer swim classes.
