Princeton University religion Professor Cornel West and lawyer Johnnie Cochran will discuss Jim Crow laws in New Jersey on NJN’s "Another View" at 6 p.m. Jan. 21.
The program, "Jim Crow in New Jersey: Then & Now," will complement a PBS series on white supremacist laws scheduled to be broadcast at 10 p.m. on four consecutive Thursdays beginning Jan. 2.
"Another View" will be rebroadcast at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 26.
A prolific writer and widely cited scholar, Dr. West focuses on the area where religious thought, social theory and pragmatic philosophy meet. His book, "Race Matters," influenced a national dialogue on race.
Best known for his defense of O.J. Simpson, Mr. Cochran has been an attorney for more than 40 years and has worked on important cases involving civil rights and race relations.
Jim Crow laws and customs ranged from whites-only lunch counters to poll taxes and sustained a life of subordination for southern blacks. They spanned the years from the end of the Civil War to the beginning of the civil rights movement.
The four one-hour programs offer an oral history, with eyewitness testimony from people who lived through parts of this era.
