remembers service
To the editor:
As a resident of Bordentown Township for the past 52 years, I have been fortunate to have many memorable experiences and honors that come with being active in community life.
None more so than serving as a member of the Bordentown Township Committee for the past six years.
I have been blessed with the honor of serving as deputy mayor in 1998 and mayor of our wonderful township in 1999.
While holding these titles have been a great privilege, it is the many initiatives instituted by the Democratic members of the Township Committee that have positively benefited our residents, of which I am most proud.
We kept our promise to bring tax relief to our residents by lowering local purpose tax 25 percent.
We represented the interest of our residents by adopting a new Master Plan after extensive public input and meetings to control future residential growth in our community.
In 1999, we instituted an aggressive Open Space and Farmland Preservation Program and set a goal of obtaining $10 million in state and county open space preservation grant funds.
I am glad to say that we are well on our way of achieving that goal having been awarded $4.685 million dollars in grant funds to date.
On July 1, 2000 I voted to preserve the 70-acre Scattergood Farm in the southeastern region of our community.
Along with my Democratic colleagues on the Township Committee, I supported the enhancement of our residents’ safety obtaining $825,000 in federal grant funds to hire more police officers and instituting a new township-based ambulance service on Jan. 1, 2000.
We expanded Northern Community Park and improved our other parks by installing new playground equipment and new picnic benches, an improved turf maintenance program was implemented and our park pavilion buildings were refurbished.
We instituted a Road and Drainage Improvement Program under which 17 township streets were reconstructed or repaved.
My Democratic colleagues and I opposed the expansion of the Johnstone Juvenile Prison Facility in our township and fought valiantly in the courts to stop the proposed construction.
More recently, I opposed the construction of the proposed Conectiv power plant in our township because of the environmental dangers such a plant would impose on our residents and our township.
I am proud to say I have always tried to assist our residents who needed help, whether it was helping senior citizens with their transportation needs, or enrolling in the Meals on Wheels program, or encouraging residents to apply for the housing rehabilitation program, or just a friendly visit to talk about their concerns for our community.
Even though I left the Township Committee at the end of 2002, I will not be leaving our wonderful township and plan to continue to be active in our civic affairs and our community life.
I want to thank the people of Bordentown Township whose steadfast support gave me the honor and privilege of serving their interests on the Township Committee for the past six years.
I want to thank our township employees without whom the many accomplishments for our community would not have been achieved.
Last but not least, I want to thank my family and friends whose love, encouragement and support allowed me to be an effective member of the Bordentown Township Committee.
I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year. May God bless you all and keep you well in the future. Thank you.

A resolution
for the new year
To the editor:
I would like to take this time to thank the out-going Township Committee members for their service and welcome the newly sworn-in members.
I know that being a committee member is very time consuming and involves a large commitment by each and every member and their families.
Thank you all for being willing to serve and making the investment in our town.
With the new year ahead of us and new and challenging issues facing our town, I would also like to make a commitment for the upcoming year. I resolve to get more involved township meetings, continue to research issues to get to the truth and to keep writing to the local papers in an effort to keep the public informed.
Since I got involved in local issues and started looking into state issues and the politicians involved, I was amazed at what goes on and how things work. This peek into the political world made me believe more than ever that we need change.
We need campaign reform to bring back the politicians to the people from the special interest groups. We need to control and reduce spending to avoid tax increases.
We need clean ratable to increase our tax base. We need people who will work for our township residents and do what is best for our township. Most of all, we need the people of Bordentown to stay informed. Information is a powerful tool and there is a lot of information out there.
Happy new year to all and I look forward to amore productive and informative 2003.
