Religious club is worthy pursuit for teens.
To the editor:
While attending the most recent board of education meeting on Jan. 15, I was quite shocked and appalled at the reactions of some of our township’s seniors in regards to the Christian athletics club that some of our township’s students want to form.
These young adults are in no way trying to "infiltrate" or "proselytize" the student population, nor are they trying to promote Christianity over Judaism. They have no intentions of infringing on the Jewish community. They are not a group of Bible-thumping zealots.
Some of these seniors actually went as far as to threaten the board "if you allow this Christian group, we will vote down every school board issue." They even brought Hitler’s name into play. Can you believe that? Yet, the Jewish community uses the Richard P. Marasco Performing Arts center, which is on school grounds, as a gathering place specifically for Jewish affairs.
While these opponents are afraid of their faith being infringed upon, I believe this can’t be so. If you have faith, whether it is Christian, Judaism, Muslim, Buddhism, Islamic, Hindu, Shinto, Native American, etc., you accept and acknowledge that there are others with other faiths. If you truly have faith then you won’t be persuaded. If you are persuaded, then you never really had it at all. After all, either you have faith or you do not.
I believe in this day and age of violent, vulgar, and offensive song lyrics, the violence in movies and on videos, and the peer pressures of sex and drugs, this group would be a positive shining light. I also think these opponents should channel their energies in finding students that want to have their own club, in which they can embrace their faith as strongly.
