Montgomery backs call for emergency signal

MONTGOMERY — The Township Committee now supports Montgomery Emergency Medical Services’ request for the state Department of Transportation to install an emergency light at the intersection of Harlingen Road and Route 206.
The township’s Transportation Advisory Committee met Tuesday to discuss the issue and recommended the township endorse the rescue squad’s request.
"The TAC, the governing body and I personally support installing an emergency signal at that intersection," Mayor Louise Wilson said.
The Montgomery EMS recently petitioned the DOT to install an emergency signal at the intersection to help its drivers safely cross over Route 206 on Harlingen Road when responding to emergency calls. The signal would be activated by the squad, turning on a red light to Route 206 traffic and a green light to traffic on Harlingen Road.
The Montgomery EMS’ headquarters is located at 8 Harlingen Road.
Mayor Wilson said the Township Committee also is petitioning the DOT to reduce the speed limit on Route 206 between Rutland Road and Montfort Drive from 50 to 40 miles per hour.
"People tend not to slow or stop for emergency vehicles," she said. "We believe the emergency signal in combination with a reduction in the speed limit will make the intersection safer."
