    Joseph Berkowitz, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 19, at his home.
    Born in Bayonne, he resided in Cranford, Old Bridge and ýPage=006 Column=002 OK,0017.05þ
Monroe before moving to Boca Raton, Fla., 5 years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1983, he was a teacher of the handicapped at Branchburg School in Newark for 37 years. He graduated from Jersey City State Teacher’s College and received a master’s degree in special education from Seton Hall University. Mr. Berkowitz was an active member of the East Brunswick Jewish Center and was a member of the Knights of Pythias.
    His wife, Shirley Berkowitz, died in 1998. He is survived by a son, Richard Berkowitz and his wife, Myra, of Wayne; a daughter, Robin Sherwin and her husband, John, of Needham, Maine; 6 grandchildren, Eric Berkowitz, Lisa Gold, Ross Berkowitz, Lindsay Sherwin, Steven Berkowitz, and Ashley Sherwin and a great-grandson, Justin Gold.
    Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 22, at East Brunswick’s Jewish Center. Burial followed at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge. Arrangements were made by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels in East Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to The Hospice by the Sea, 1531 West Palmetto Road, Boca Raton, Fla., 33486.
