Accident sends vehicle into building

FREEHOLD — No injuries were reported as a result of a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Throckmorton and Main streets at about noon Monday.

According to Patrolman William Bismarck, the police department’s traffic and safety officer, the collision resulted in one vehicle hitting the side wall of the El Meson restaurant, West Main Street.

Bismarck said a vehicle heading east on Main Street, driven by Sharifah Wilburn, of Neptune, collided with a vehicle driven by Martin Weinshenker, of Freehold, that was on Throckmorton Street trying to cross the intersection.

There is no traffic light at the intersection. Throckmorton Street is controlled by stop signs.

Following the collision in the intersection, Wilburn’s vehicle went up on the sidewalk and struck the side wall of the restaurant. That brought borough code enforcer Hank Stryker III to the scene of the accident.

Along with police officers, first aid and fire volunteers were also on the scene. Bismarck said those involved in the accident — the two drivers and at least one passenger — all refused medical treatment. The accident is under investigation, according to Bismarck.

Stryker said he had the restaurant owners close the business until officials had an opportunity to evaluate the damage. He said that due to the angle at which Wilburn’s vehicle hit the building, it may have resulted in some structural damage.
