With two minutes remaining in the first half of Tuesday’s home game versus Delran, Jaimie Walton dished off a pass to Erica Davis, who proceeded to make a lay-up and set up a new Northern Burlington County Regional High School girls’ varsity basketball record with her 908th career point.
The old record of 907 points had been held by Tara Tomasso.
"The game was stopped and Erica received flowers and Jaimie Walton received a gift certificate to the General Store in Columbus for making the record-breaking pass," said NBC Coach Terry Jennings.
Before all was said and done, Davis would have 25 points, four blocks and 13 rebounds and NBC would have yet another win (68-53).
"We used a suffocating press to pull away in the second quarter as we dissected their (the Bears) zone with precision-passing," remarked Coach Jennings.
Erin Walton scored 18 points and knocked down several key shots. Kourtney Gibbs (14 points), Jaimie Walton (five points), Rachel Walder (four points) and Erika Sensbach (two points) also scored for the Greyhounds.
Last Friday, at NBC, Holy Cross escaped with a slim 49-45 victory.
Although Erica Davis scored 20 points in the contest, early foul woes kept her from putting up even more monstrous numbers. "We need to play a little smarter when she’s (Davis) in foul trouble," said Coach Jennings.
Erin Walton (11 points) and Jaimie Walton (10 points) combined to score 21 points, but NBC couldn’t generate much offense elsewhere (it got two points apiece from Cassie Tyler and Kourtney Gibbs). Still, the game ended up being a good learning experience for NBC, which is 9-3.
NBC is scheduled at Burlington Township on Thursday. It is scheduled to host Lenape on Saturday and Willingboro on Tuesday. Davis is only 79 points short of 1,000 for her career.
BRHS
Sparked by Randi Temple’s 24-point effort, the Bordentown Regional High School girls’ varsity basketball team moved one step closer to clinching a playoff spot with a 55-44 win at Westampton Tech.
"We only have games (four after Tuesday’s Holy Cross game) left before the cutoff so the quicker we get the wins the less pressure," said Temple, Bordentown’s hot-shooting guard. "We’ve been playing good."
Michele Gore netted a dozen points, while Emily Napolitano scored seven, Latoya Taylor had six points and Lisa Gilardi scored two points in the win.
Bordentown passed the ball well throughout the contest, and that played a major role in its securing the win.
Holy Cross handed the Scotties a 52-41 setback on Tuesday at Bordentown. Nevertheless, the Scotties took several positives away from the game.
"We were down by 22 at half time and then we made some great adjustments and went out and had a great second half," said Bordentown Cach Sharon Conover.
Bordentown got some balanced scoring from Latoya Taylor (11 points), Randi Temple (10 points), Lauren Nucera (five points), Taryn Lynch (four points), Michele Gore (two points) and Christina Della Fave (two points) in the contest, and they almost pulled out the win.
The 7-6 Scotties are scheduled to host Burlington City on Thursday. Then on Friday they are scheduled at Riverside. And on Tuesday they are scheduled to host Delran.
FLORENCE
Burlington City defeated the Florence Township Memorial High School girls’ varsity basketball Team, 57-25, at Florence this past Tuesday.
Even so, the Flashes played well in the first quarter.
"We were right there," said Florence head coach Sheri Olin-Piratzky, whose team trailed only 10-7 after opening stanza.
What hurt Florence was its 26 turnovers in the contest. If it had somehow been able to have cut that number in half it would have been a much closer game.
Nevertheless, Florence’s Trisha Muni had a big game with 12 points. Stephanie Borota hit a three-pointer and Sharra Loftin (three points), Katie Thompson (two points), Mandy Zacharkow (two points), Stephanie Muni (two points) and Marissa Horner (one point) all tallied in a losing cause.
Last Thursday’s 63-25 loss at Riverside was a tough one for the Flashes because the Rams’ great star Sabra Wrice was for her 1,000th-career point and Riverside was, consequently, pumped up for the contest. Still, several Flashes had solid games, including Stephanie Borota, who netted two three-pointers, and Sharra Loftin, who tallied five points. Meanwhile, Wrice scored 19 points to reach the big career milestone.
Florence, however, did have a strong fourth quarter in which it outscored Riverside 9-4.
Florence (2-10) is scheduled to host McCorristin on Thursday. On Friday, Florence is scheduled at Life Center and on Tuesday Florence is scheduled at Palmyra.
LCA
The games are getting much Closer, but the Life Center Academy girls’ varsity basketball team lost a pair of games this past week to drop its record to 7-7.
Last Thursday at Florence, Mercy Vo-Tech edged Life Center Academy, 42-37. Nevertheless, Samantha Weer (10 points), Melinda Hinson (10 points), Sarah Cintron (eight points), Sarah Lewis and Marissa Mohrman (four points) all were productive for the Warriors.
Last Friday, Samantha Weer scored 22 points, but Pilgrim Academy still topped LCA 47-44.
The Warriors broke out to an 18-11 lead, but Pilgrim Academy (10-0) came right back with a 16-5 second quarter to gain a lead. Sarah Cintron knocked down six field goals for 12 points while Melinda Hinson added eight points and Sarah Lewis hit a field goal in a losing cause.
LCA’s scheduled Tuesday home game versus King’s Academy was cancelled.
LCA is scheduled to host Florence on Friday and Burlington City on Saturday. On Monday, LCA is scheduled at King’s Academy and on Tuesday it is scheduled to host the Solebury School.
