Four boys, three from Hopewell Township and one from Ewing, have been charged with possession of marijuana after a teacher caught them allegedly smoking the drug in the dugout of Hopewell Valley Central High School’s softball field.
Two of the Hopewell Township boys are 12 years old. The third township boy is 14. The Ewing boy is 16.
Township police Capt. George Meyer said a teacher saw the boys in the softball dugout around 5 p.m. Jan 23. Upon approaching the boys, the teacher smelled burnt marijuana.
The boys were brought into the school office and the police called at 5:10 p.m. That was nearly two and a half hours after the end of the regular school day at 2:45 p.m. However, each day, students involved in extracurricular activities are in the school and/or on its grounds after classes end.
The boys all were released to their families after their cases were processed at township police headquarters.
The case will be handled by the Family Court Division of state Superior Court, in Trenton.
