Police and fire officials say they believe sparks from a low chimney ignited a dormer in the residence at 83 W. Broad St., Hopewell Borough, Saturday night.
"A passing motorist saw the dormer was on fire and knocked on the door to tell the residents, who called in the alarm," said township police Capt. George Meyer.
Responding along with the Hopewell Fire Department were units from Pennington, Lawrenceville and Belle Mead.
Damage from the fire was relatively minor, Capt. Meyer said. There were no injuries as a result of the blaze, which was put out in a matter of minutes.
At this point, investigators say they believe the fire was caused by sparks from a fireplace chimney that blew onto the dormer. "The alarm was called in a little after 9 p.m. There had been a fire in the fireplace since 4 p.m.," Capt. Meyer said. He added that the top of the chimney for the fireplace is near the dormer that caught fire.
Patrolman Lincoln Karnoff responded for the township police.
