Editorial: Local merchants brainstorm to aid each other

By: Mae Rhine
Every second Thursday of the month, a handful of business owners meet in Lambertville to — what else — talk about business.
They brainstorm and have refreshments in an informal atmosphere, sitting on rugs and pillows while discussing their all-important futures.
Merchants Meet was organized by Delyn McCosh three months ago, and it’s a welcome addition to the city. It already has one success under its belt — Saturday Night Live when 22 shops stayed open Saturday nights until 9 through the holidays. It wasn’t advertised, but it was successful nonetheless.
Now they’re talking about a First Saturday when shops would be open later the first Saturday of each month.
They also want to help each other with advertising, mailing lists and Internet sales.
More and more business owners keep showing up at the meetings, and we’re excited about the possibilities. Lambertville relies on its tourist trade, and this growing group of merchants can make a real difference.
Many issues discussed at City Council meetings directly affect the central business district. And the merchants themselves, from their brainstorming sessions, could effect some positive changes to benefit all involved.
We urge all business owners to attend these meetings, held at Pasha Rugs Warehouse at 54 Coryell St. at 6:15 p.m. The next one is Thursday, Feb. 13.
