Belle Mead Farmers LLC honored the memory of S. Robert Conard, who faithfully served on the firm’s board of directors for over 30 years until his death Dec. 21, at the Jan. 21 meeting of the co-op’s board.
The directors recognized that Mr. Conard was a valuable asset to the company.
"Mr. Conard was a great person to talk to about your troubles. He always was an intent listener and would do his best to give advice pulling from his vast wealth of knowledge. He was never critical and never had an unkind word for anyone and in the instance that he was unable to offer useful advice he would say, ‘things have a way of working them selves out’ and you know they always did," the directors said in a released statement. "He has helped to shape the town of Hillsborough into the town we all know and helped to preserve farming in the local community.
"He will live in our hearts and community forever."
Mr. Conard was a life long resident of Hillsborough, graduated Somerville High School in 1948 and went on to become mayor of Hillsborough. He also resided as president of the Board of Health for 20 years. He was a lifetime farmer of 50 years and was very active in various civic and professional organizations. He was a member of the Harlingen Reformed Church where he served as trustee of the memorial fund and of the Belle Mead Cemetery Association.
He served as Township Committeeman and also served on the Historical Commission. He was a member of the New Jersey Agricultural Society, the Princeton Agricultural Society; he was Vice President of the United Milk Producers, Regional Director of the American Dairy association, and member of the HolsteinFresian Breeders Association, the North Central Jersey Farm Credit Advisory Committee and the Somerset County ASCS.
